The Royal Details
Black Dolphin is an exotic grade cut with deep purple buds and heavy frost. Sold from 7 grams up to a pound, part of the Kingdom's indoor and exotic THCA flower.
The short version
- The frost is trichomes. Tiny resin glands, not sugar, not crystal, not additive.
- They are where everything lives. Cannabinoids and terpenes are both produced inside them.
- They break off easily. Which is why handling and storage matter on a frosty cut.
- Six weights, starting at 7 grams.
What the frost on a bud actually is
The white sparkle on good flower gets called frost, crystal or sugar. It is none of those. It is trichomes.
Trichomes are microscopic resin glands that grow on the surface of the flower. Each one looks like a tiny stalk with a bulb on top, and that bulb is where the plant produces both cannabinoids and terpenes. Everything that makes flower worth buying is made inside those heads.
That is why frost and aroma usually travel together. A bud that looks heavily frosted has more of the structures that produce smell, and a bud with no visible trichomes usually has little of either.
| Common name | What it really is |
|---|---|
| Frost, crystal, sugar | Trichomes. Resin glands on the flower surface |
| Kief | Trichome heads that have broken off and collected |
| Sticky or gummy | Resin from ruptured trichome heads |
| Hash | Trichomes separated from the plant and pressed together |
Why this matters for a frosty cut
Trichomes snap off. They sit on the outside of the bud on fragile stalks, and rough handling, static and freezing all knock them loose.
On a heavily frosted exotic, those trichomes are most of what you paid the premium for. Plastic containers build static and strip them. Freezing makes them brittle and they shear off the moment you touch the bud. Glass, a humidity pack and a gentle hand keep what you bought on the flower rather than in the bottom of the jar.
What exotic grade means
Exotic is a selection grade, not a strain and not a legal category. It describes the best flower picked out of an indoor crop: biggest, best formed, best cured. It is a sorting decision made after growing rather than a different growing method.
You are paying for appearance, density and the cure. Not for a different compliance or testing standard. Everything on this site is lab tested by batch and compliant at no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight.
Choosing a weight
| Size | Grams | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 7 grams | 7 g | Trying an exotic before committing |
| 14 grams | 14 g | A half ounce |
| 28 grams | 28 g | An ounce |
| Quarter pound | 112 g | A steady smoker, a month or two |
| Half pound | 225 g | Heavy use, or splitting with others |
| Pound | 450 g | Volume buying |
Storing a frosty cut
Airtight, cool and dark. Glass, never plastic. Plastic builds static and pulls trichomes straight off the bud.
A humidity pack rated 58 to 62% keeps it from drying out, because over-dry flower sheds trichomes far more readily. Handle it as little as possible, break it up only when you are about to use it, and do not freeze it.
Worth a look before you grind
Hold a bud up to a light and look at the surface properly. Once you know what trichomes are, you can judge flower on sight far better than any description can tell you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the frost on THCA flower?
Trichomes. They are microscopic resin glands that grow on the surface of the flower, each one a tiny stalk with a bulb on top. The plant produces both cannabinoids and terpenes inside those heads, which is why frost and aroma usually go together.
Is the crystal on buds added?
No. It is produced by the plant itself. Trichomes are part of the flower, not a coating applied afterwards.
What is kief?
Trichome heads that have broken off the flower and collected together, usually in the bottom of a grinder or a jar. Hash is the same material separated deliberately and pressed.
Why does storage matter more on frosty flower?
Because trichomes sit on the outside of the bud on fragile stalks and snap off easily. Static from plastic containers strips them, and freezing makes them brittle. On an exotic, those trichomes are most of what the premium paid for.
What does exotic mean?
A selection grade rather than a strain or a legal category. The best flower picked out of an indoor crop: biggest, best formed, best cured. A sorting decision made after growing rather than a different growing method.
Will it show up on a drug test?
Assume yes. Standard tests look for THC metabolites and do not distinguish hemp derived from anything else. If you are tested for work or any other reason, do not use it.
