The short version

  • GSC is OG Kush crossed with Durban Poison. Bred in California around 2010.
  • It is the parent of Gelato, and through Gelato, of a huge share of the modern shelf.
  • The name was legally contested, which is why you will also see it sold as GSC.
  • This run is light assist, greenhouse grown with supplemental lighting.

Where Girl Scout Cookies came from

GSC was bred in the San Francisco Bay Area around 2010 by the Cookies crew, crossing OG Kush with Durban Poison, a South African landrace.

It became the strain that defined the decade that followed. Cross GSC onward and you get Gelato. Cross Gelato onward and you get an enormous proportion of what sells today, including the Runtz and Sherbert families. Very few strains have that kind of downstream influence.

Generation Strain
Parents OG Kush crossed with Durban Poison
This strain Girl Scout Cookies, also sold as GSC
Children Gelato, Sunset Sherbert, Thin Mint
Grandchildren Runtz, Gelato 41, and much of the current shelf

Why it is often just called GSC

The Girl Scouts of the USA objected to the use of their name, and growers and retailers widely shortened it to GSC rather than fight over it.

It is the same pattern as Gorilla Glue becoming GG4 after the adhesive company's trademark action. Two of the most famous strains in cannabis both go by initials because of trademark disputes, which is a small window into how the industry grew up faster than its naming conventions did.

Girl Scout Cookies, GSC, Thin Mint

Girl Scout Cookies and GSC are the same strain. Thin Mint is different: it is a selected phenotype of GSC rather than the original cut, so it is a descendant rather than a synonym. If a listing says Thin Mint, that is a related but distinct plant.

What light assist means

This run is greenhouse grown with light assist, meaning supplemental lamps were added on top of natural sunlight so the plants got a full, consistent day regardless of the weather.

It sits between straight greenhouse and indoor: better structure and consistency than sunlight alone, without indoor pricing.

Choosing a weight

The six sizes on this listing.
Size Grams Suits
7 grams 7 g Trying the strain for the first time
14 grams 14 g A half ounce
28 grams 28 g An ounce. The usual starting point
Quarter pound 112 g A steady smoker, a month or two
Half pound 225 g Heavy use, or splitting with others
Pound 450 g Volume buying and rolling in quantity

Divide the price by the grams to compare it against anything else. Most of the bulk saving arrives early on the ladder.

Storing it

Airtight, cool and dark. Glass rather than plastic, because plastic holds static and pulls trichomes off the bud. A humidity pack rated 58 to 62% keeps it steady. Break larger weights into smaller jars on arrival and open only the one you are using. Do not freeze it.

Working through the family tree

If you have tried OG Kush, this is the next step in the lineage. Take 7 grams and you can taste the generation gap for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is Girl Scout Cookies crossed from?

OG Kush crossed with Durban Poison, a South African landrace. It was bred in the San Francisco Bay Area around 2010 by the Cookies crew.

Why is it called GSC?

The Girl Scouts of the USA objected to the use of their name, and the industry widely shortened it to GSC rather than contest it. It is the same pattern as Gorilla Glue becoming GG4 after a trademark action by the adhesive company.

Is Girl Scout Cookies the same as Thin Mint?

No. Thin Mint is a selected phenotype of GSC, so it is a descendant rather than another name for the same plant. Girl Scout Cookies and GSC are the same strain.

What strains come from GSC?

Gelato, Sunset Sherbert and Thin Mint descend directly from it, and through Gelato it is behind a large share of the current shelf including the Runtz family.

What does light assist mean?

Greenhouse grown with supplemental lamps added on top of natural sunlight, so the plants get a full consistent day whatever the weather. It sits between straight greenhouse and indoor on both consistency and price.

How should I store it?

Airtight, cool and dark. Glass rather than plastic, with a 58 to 62% humidity pack. Break larger weights into smaller jars on arrival and open only the one you are using. Do not freeze it.

Will it show up on a drug test?

Assume yes. Standard tests look for THC metabolites and do not distinguish hemp derived from anything else. If you are tested for work or any other reason, do not use it.
