Does THCA Get You High: The Honest Answer

Yes, THCA gets you high, as long as you heat it. Smoking, vaping or dabbing converts THCA into delta-9 THC on the way to your lungs. The only reason the label on a jar of greenhouse THCA flower says THCA rather than THC is that the conversion has not happened yet while it is sitting in the jar. Light it and it has.

Why the label says THCA and not THC
THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is what the cannabis plant actually produces, and it is what you are buying when you pick up a jar of greenhouse THCA flower. THC, the compound people mean when they talk about getting high, barely exists in a living plant. The plant makes the acid form and heat does the rest.
The difference between the two molecules is one carboxyl group, a cluster of one carbon and two oxygen atoms hanging off the ring. That group changes the shape of the molecule enough that it does not fit the CB1 receptors in the brain, which is why an unlit jar of flower is not doing anything to anyone.
Apply heat and that group leaves as carbon dioxide. What is left is delta-9 THC. This is called decarboxylation, and it has been measured in a laboratory rather than estimated.
What heat actually does, with real numbers
Researchers at the University of Mississippi heated cannabis extracts in a vacuum oven across a range of temperatures and tracked how fast THCA disappeared and THC appeared. These are their figures.

Two things in that table matter to a buyer. The speed climbs steeply with temperature, and the conversion was clean at every temperature tested, with no side products and no measurable oxidation into cannabinol under those conditions.

Does the method change anything?
Smoking a joint or a bowl. Yes, it converts. Combustion temperatures are hundreds of degrees above what the reaction needs.
Vaporising. Yes. Most dry herb vaporisers run between 180°C and 220°C, well above the temperature the conversion needs. That is also above the point where sustained oven heat starts oxidising THC away, but a vapour draw lasts seconds rather than half an hour, so the exposure is not comparable.
Dabbing a concentrate. Yes, and fastest of all.
Cooking with it. This is the one place the conversion can fail.
The one thing worth knowing before you cook with it
Butter simmering at 90°C for twenty minutes never reaches the temperature the reaction needs, which is why edibles made from flower straight out of the jar disappoint people. Heat the flower in the oven first, then infuse.
Why THCA flower is sold as hemp
Hemp is a legal definition, not a description of strength.
Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is defined by its delta-9 THC content on a dry weight basis. At or below 0.3 percent, it is hemp. THCA is a different molecule and is measured separately on a certificate of analysis. So flower can carry a high THCA figure and a delta-9 figure under the threshold at the same time, and both numbers are accurate.

State law is a separate question from federal law, and several states restrict THCA products regardless of the federal position. Check where you are before ordering.
What this means before you buy
If you are subject to drug testing of any kind, do not use it. Tests look for a THC metabolite, and heating THCA produces exactly that.

Does THCA get you high?
Yes, THCA gets you high once you heat it. Does a THCA pre-roll get you high?
Yes, a THCA pre-roll gets you high. It is the same flower in a paper, and lighting it converts the THCA to delta-9 THC in the moment the flame touches it. There is no difference in effect between a pre-roll and the same strain rolled at home, beyond how finely it was ground and how well it was packed.
Will THCA get you as high as regular THC?
Once converted, it is the same molecule, so the effect is the same. What differs is how much survives the conversion. Research on cannabis extract found the THCA to THC reaction essentially complete with a total material loss just under 8 percent at 110°C. Smoking is less efficient than a controlled oven because some material is simply burned away.
At what temperature does THCA convert to THC?
Meaningfully from about 100°C, or 212°F, upward. Laboratory work found full conversion in roughly 30 minutes at 110°C, 9 minutes at 130°C and 6 minutes at 145°C, while 80°C and 95°C did not complete within an hour. Higher temperature means faster conversion, but past roughly 160°C you start losing THC to oxidation.
Does THCA turn into THC on its own over time?
Slowly, yes. Light, warmth and time all drive the same reaction, which is why an older batch shows a slightly higher delta-9 figure and a slightly lower THCA figure than it did on the day it was packed. It is one reason certificates of analysis carry a date, and one reason flower is best stored cool and dark.
Why is THCA flower legal if it gets you high?
Because the legal test measures one specific compound in the unheated flower rather than what happens after you light it.
