How Long Does THCA Stay in Your System
Share
THCA stays in your system for days to weeks if you smoked or vaped it, and a month or more for daily users. Drug tests do not look for THCA at all. They look for a THC breakdown product, and heating THCA flower produces THC. Frequency of use moves the number further than anything else.
The short version
- Saliva is usually 24 to 72 hours, blood up to about 24 hours, urine 1 to 30 days or more, hair up to about 90 days.
- Frequency drives the urine window harder than body weight, hydration or anything else you can control.
- No test screens for THCA itself. They screen for a metabolite your body makes after processing delta-9 THC.
- If a test is coming, abstinence is the only reliable approach. Timing it is not a strategy.
Why THCA shows up at all
THCA on its own is not what a test is hunting for. Screens are built to detect a metabolite your body makes after processing delta-9 THC, and anyone who has been smoking THCA flower has produced exactly that metabolite.
The chain runs in three steps. Heat converts THCA into delta-9 THC. Your body converts delta-9 THC into the carboxylic acid metabolite. That metabolite is fat soluble, so it does not flush out quickly. It accumulates in fatty tissue and releases slowly, which is the whole reason cannabis detection windows are measured in weeks rather than hours.
Skip the heat and the chain never starts. Apply heat and you are in the same position as anyone using any other THC product. The conversion itself is covered in does THCA get you high.
The naming trap, and why the government just fixed it
This is worth two minutes because it causes real confusion. The metabolite tests look for used to be abbreviated THCA by federal drug testing guidelines. That is the same abbreviation the hemp trade uses for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the raw compound in the plant. Two completely different molecules, one abbreviation.
HHS changed it. In the 2025 authorised testing panels the urine metabolite was renamed Δ9THCC, and the notice says the new abbreviation exists specifically to distinguish it from the plant cannabinoid "that is also commonly abbreviated as THCA". The panels were reissued unchanged in March 2026, so those are the current figures and the current naming.
So when a lab report says Δ9THCC, or THC-COOH, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid, those are all the same thing, and none of them is the THCA in your jar.
Detection windows by test type
The ranges below are the ones commonly reported across testing and clinical sources. Treat them as ranges, not promises. Individual variation is large and no table can tell you what your own result will be on a given day.
| Test type | Typical detection window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Saliva | 24 to 72 hours | Shortest window. Used for roadside and some workplace screening |
| Blood | Up to about 24 hours | Detectable within roughly 30 minutes of use. Measures recent presence, not history. Longer in frequent users |
| Urine | 1 to 30 days or more | By far the most common workplace test. The range is this wide because frequency drives it |
| Hair | Up to about 90 days | Longest window. Detects a pattern of use rather than a single occasion |
Urine, broken down by how often you use
Urine is the test most people are actually facing, and the range above is close to useless without context. Frequency is the single biggest variable.
| Pattern of use | Commonly reported urine window |
|---|---|
| Single occasion | 1 to 3 days |
| A few times a week | 5 to 7 days |
| Daily | 10 to 30 days, sometimes longer |
| Heavy daily, over a long period | 30 days or more |
What moves the numbers
How often you use. The dominant factor, and it is not close. THC-COOH accumulates, so a daily user starts every day with a reserve that an occasional user does not have.
Body composition. THC-COOH is stored in fat. More fat mass generally means a longer tail.
Metabolism and hydration. Affects the rate of clearance, but far less than people hope. Drinking water dilutes a sample, it does not remove metabolites from tissue, and dilution is something labs actively screen for.
How much you consumed and how strong it was. A higher THCA percentage means more THC after conversion, which means more metabolite.
The test's cut-off level. A screen is not a yes or no on presence, it is a threshold. Under the federal workplace panels, a urine specimen screens positive at 50 nanograms per millilitre and is then confirmed at 15 nanograms per millilitre. Oral fluid runs at 4 nanograms initial and 2 confirmatory. Those figures apply to federal agency testing, not to every private employer, so a more sensitive panel elsewhere can catch what a federal one would not. The same body can pass one test and fail another on the same day.
Why some articles claim it clears in a day or two
You will find pages saying THCA is out of your system inside 48 hours. That figure describes unheated THCA, which never becomes the metabolite a test is looking for. It has nothing to do with smoking or vaping, which is how this product is actually used.
If you lit it, the 48 hour number does not apply to you. Use the tables above.
The straight advice
If you are facing a drug test, do not use THCA products. Not a reduced amount, not a few days before, not a lower potency batch. Heating THCA produces the exact compound tests are designed to find, and the detection window for a regular user is long enough that timing it is not a strategy. This is the same position we take on our FAQ page, and we would rather lose the sale than have a customer lose a job.
What you can actually check
You cannot check what your own body will do. You can check what you are buying.
Every batch we sell publishes a full cannabinoid panel, so you can read the THCA percentage and the delta-9 figure before you order rather than guessing. A higher THCA figure means more THC after conversion, which is worth knowing whether or not testing is a factor for you.
Know what is in the jar
Every batch is third-party tested and the panel is published. Read the certificates of analysis before you order.
Frequently asked questions
How long does THCA stay in your system?
THCA stays in your system for days to weeks if it was heated. Commonly reported urine windows run 1 to 3 days for a single occasion, 5 to 7 days for a few times a week, and 10 to 30 days or longer for daily use. Saliva is usually 24 to 72 hours, blood up to 24 hours, and hair up to about 90 days.
Does THCA show up on a drug test?
Yes, THCA shows up on a drug test, so expect it to. Tests do not screen for THCA itself, they screen for a carboxylic acid metabolite of delta-9 THC, abbreviated Δ9THCC in current federal guidelines. Because heating THCA produces delta-9 THC, smoking or vaping it produces that metabolite and can absolutely cause a positive result.
How long does THCA stay in urine if you smoke every day?
Commonly reported at 10 to 30 days, and longer for heavy long term daily use. THC-COOH is fat soluble and accumulates, so a daily user carries a reserve that releases slowly. This is the widest and least predictable of all the windows, which is why abstinence rather than timing is the only reliable approach.
What do drug tests actually look for?
A carboxylic acid metabolite your body makes after processing delta-9 THC, abbreviated Δ9THCC and also written THC-COOH. It is fat soluble, which is why it lingers. Federal workplace urine panels screen at 50 nanograms per millilitre and confirm at 15, so the same person can pass a less sensitive test and fail a more sensitive one on the same day.
Can you speed up how fast THCA leaves your system?
Not meaningfully. Hydration, exercise and diet have a marginal effect at best, and drinking large volumes of water dilutes a sample rather than clearing metabolites from tissue. Laboratories routinely screen for dilution. Time and abstinence are the only things that reliably change the result.
Does THCA show up on a mouth swab test?
Yes, and it is the shortest window of the four. Saliva testing commonly detects use for 24 to 72 hours. Oral fluid also uses different thresholds from urine: federal panels screen at 4 nanograms per millilitre and confirm at 2, and they look for delta-9 THC itself rather than the urine metabolite.
Detection windows on this page are general ranges reported across testing and clinical sources. They are not a prediction of any individual result and should not be treated as one. All flower sold here is US Farm Bill hemp containing no more than 0.3 percent delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. Third-party lab reports for every batch are available on our certificates of analysis page. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
